In 1921, Robert Pein set out to create a new kind of insurance firm. He was frustrated with exorbitant insurance rates and unfairly handled claims. State Auto will be different, he said, and his commitment to fair rates and prompt and fair claims service remains their hallmark to this day and they've grown a lot since then. Today, they have $4.6 billion in assets and $2 billion in premiums in 33 states. They continue to rely on independent agents to sell their products.
